Description
The MCP3008 adds eight 10-bit analogue inputs to a Raspberry Pi. This bare DIP chip is the converter used between the capacitive soil-moisture sensor and the Pi in the plant-monitor project.
Project compatibility
- Runs from 3.3 V in the guide so its SPI logic is safe for Raspberry Pi GPIO.
- Connects over SPI and accepts the soil sensor’s analogue output on a channel such as CH0.
- The DIP package plugs directly into a solderless breadboard.
Before wiring
Do not feed an analogue input above the MCP3008 reference voltage. Double-check the chip notch and pin numbering before applying power; reversed power wiring can damage the chip.
